“Knuffle Bunny” Inspired Cartoon Making

“Knuffle Bunny”
We read this hilarious tale of a young child who goes on an errand with her daddy and loses her favorite toy, Knuffle Bunny. Unable to talk, the girl makes silly gestures and word choices in an effort to communicate with her daddy.

The students then thought of a time they lost something or had trouble communicating with someone. The then made cartoon drawings of themselves and placed them in a city environment, similar to the illustrations in “Knuffle Bunny.” Students learned about facial expressions, emotion and how to place a character in a space in this lesson.

Alebrijes Art Forms By Whittier Students

These photos show the students working in art class. The students learned about “Alebrijes,” which are brightly-colored Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical creatures. Pedro Linares, a Mexican artist, began creating them with papier mache as a response to his dreams.

The students viewed a presentation about alejibres. They then sketched and drew their own fantastical creatures. Many students chose their favorite animal and then added an unusual element to it, such as wings, scales, claws or tails. They then turned their ideas into papier mache sculptures. The students painted them, adding brightly-colored patterns characteristic of traditional alejibres. On the final day of the unit, the students reflected on their work, writing short stories about the lives of their fantastical animals.

I am pleased to announce that four of our students’ work has been accepted into the World Art Chicago art exhibition.  The World Art Chicago Exhibition is up now at the Gary Comer Youth Center located at 7200 South Ingleside (off South Chicago Blvd.).  The exhibit will run through Sunday, May 17th in their main hallway on the first floor of the center.   The reception for the World Art Chicago Exhibition is on Tuesday, May 5th, 2009 from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm.

World Art Chicago is a presentation of artwork from elementary school children (grades 5-8) from around the world.   The work is themed around the six Olympic values of Hope, Respect, Harmony Friendship, Excellence and Celebration.   This exhibition is being presented as part of Olympic Week Chicago.

Our students created oil pastel drawings of their “everyday heroes.”  They captured the images of people in their lives who inspire them, teach them, and encourage them to accomplish their goals.    In designing this lesson, I wanted the students to make connections on a personal level to the six values of the Olympics.
