“Our Ms. Irma’’ Whittier School Clerk

On a regular school day, our clerk, Ms. Irma arrives at 8:50. The first thing she does is to make sure that all the teachers submit their attendance.  She works on the monthly calendar. It seems she is often putting a bandage on a kid’s injury or how the kindergartners call them “boo boo’s”. During the day, Ms.Irma files papers and writes  letters to the parents. She leaves at whatever time the parents of the kids arrive to pick them up after the After School program ends at 5:30 pm.

When Ms. Irma is not answering phones , making copies for  the overhead  or even cleaning bloody noses at Whittier School, she is at home scrapbooking family and friends events. You may also find her  watching her favorite show ” Greys Anatomy” or Spanish language soap operas. Her favorite soap  opera is called “Amor Real”, which starred  Adela Noriega and Fernando Colunga.

Ms. Irma also enjoys  going out to  eat at restaurants like the”Olive Garden”and the “Flat Top Grill”. She likes the Olive Garden because its great Italian food and beautiful atmosphere. The reason she enjoys eating at the Flat Top Grill is because you get to pick fresh ingredients  that you  prepare  at your table.

Her family enjoys traveling . She likes driving on her trips. Ms. Irma and her son once went to the beautiful Smoky Mountains in Tennessee.

What Ms.Irma is proud of is her son Alonzo and his accomplishments. What she loves about her son is that he gets very exited when he gets good grades or learns something new.

“Judy in the Spotlight”

Interview with Ms. Judy Mahoney, Whittier School Clerk.

“Who runs the school?” according to our little Kindergartners and 1st graders: Judy! Who’s the first person our visitors meet? Our lovely Ms.Judy along with Ms.Irma.

Judy arrives at school at 8:15 in the morning and leaves at 5:00 in the evening. She has many responsibilities as a clerk. She has to answer phone calls, file paper work and buzz students inside the school.

Judy has been working at Whittier for 17 years. Even though Judy’s dream job was to be a runway model she accepted the job she was offered at Whittier. She took the job and that’s how she got to know all the parents and students. “ I would love to work at  Whittier until my retirement age” Judy states.

“ The most challenging part of working in Whittier is having to work with students when they don’t cooperate’’ she says. Judy’s philosophy of life is to “Be Yourself; be a leader, not a follower. Choose your friends don’t let them choose you”.

A lot of us know Ms.Judy but you may not know much about Judy’s life outside of Whittier Elementary. Judy was born in Mexico. She grew up with 8 sisters and 2 brothers. Growing up with 8 sisters, she had to share everything she owned and always had someone to fight with  and play with. Judy graduated from Hedges Elementary School and headed on to Curie High School. In case you didn’t know it, Judy is married and has 3 daughters. Her first daughter is 19 years of age, her second daughter 16 years of age, and her last daughter 9 years of age. She has no sons but has a chihuahua named Max.
